I know some of you have been with me since my comic book series GloomCookie and Nightmares & Fairy Tales, and some of you have just discovered I wrote comic books after reading my Disney villain novels. I just wanted to answer some frequently asked questions.
Both comic book series are listed as out of print at the publisher. Since I own the rights to both series I hope to have them reprinted at some point. And I’d like to continue Nightmares & Fairy Tales with Pablo Santander illustrating the series – at least so far as finally publishing Annabelle’s Story, which I know a lot of N&FT’s readers have been waiting to read for quite some time. Ideally I’d also love to reprint the first six issues of GloomCookie into a hardcover edition. Both projects would either require an interested publisher or a good chunk of time for me to create and manage a crowd-funding campaign. Neither of which I have at the moment.
As for my other graphic novel projects Hell’s Cafe and Teratopia, I still hope to have those published one day, either through my press Fearsome Library or with an interested publisher. My main concern with finding a publisher is that they pay a reasonable page rate to my artists. Too often creators are expected to work for free with the hope the book sells well so they get a percentage of the sales. This model is understandable in the small press market, I’m just not willing to ask my artists to succumb to it. Which leaves us with self-publishing, so again that means finding the time to create and manage a crowd-funding campaign, which I don’t have time for with my current writing schedule.
I am intrigued by the idea of pitching them as TV series and film concepts. That industry has historically always been far more welcoming to me than the comics industry has been (and I’m talking industry here, not readers – my comic readers are amazing. I love them). So in my spare time I have been writing pilots and pitches to see if I can’t get some interest. We shall see.
Believe me I would love nothing more than to see all these projects happen, and I do believe they will someday. So hang in there. And in the meantime enjoy my villain books.
